NTTO: July International Air Travel Report

The National Travel and Tourism Office (NTTO) just reported that 26.7 million U.S.-international traveled by air in July between the U.S. and international destinations. July numbers were up 7.3% percent compared to July 2023, with enplanements reaching 105.7% of pre-pandemic July 2019 volume. 

Originating Non-Stop Air Travel in July 2024

Non-U.S. citizen air passenger arrivals from foreign countries totaled 5.5 million in July, up 8.3% compared to July 2023 and 91% of July 2019 volume.

On a related note, overseas visitor arrivals totaled 3.4 million in July, the 33rd consecutive month overseas visitor arrivals exceeded one million. July overseas visitor arrivals reached 85.6% of July 2019 volume, up from 83.3% in June. 

U.S. citizen air passenger departures to foreign countries totaled 7.6 million in July, up 6.6% compared to July 2023, exceeding July 2019 volume by 18.3%.

Total air passenger travel (arrivals and departures) between the United States and other countries were led by Mexico 3.783 million, Canada 3.267 million, the United Kingdom 2.198 million, Germany 1.190 million, and the Dominican Republic 1.188 million.

International Regional air travel to/from the U.S.: 

  • Europe totaled 8.495 million passengers, up 6.8% over July 2023 and up 2.9% compared to July 2019. U.S citizen departures were up 16.9% compared to July 2019, while European citizen arrivals were down -15%.
  • South/Central America/Caribbean totaled 6.4 million, up 5.9% over July 2023 and up 15% compared to July 2019.
  • Asia totaled 2.7 million passengers, up 16.6% over July 2023, but down -21.7% compared to July 2019.  Asian citizen arrivals to the U.S. were down -36% compared to July 2019, and U.S. citizen departures were up 0.5%.) 


Top U.S. Ports serving international locations were New York (JFK) 3.719 million, Los Angeles (LAX) 2.401 million, Miami (MIA) 2.316 million, San Francisco (SFO) 1.637 million, and Newark (EWR) 1.612 million.

Top Foreign Ports serving U.S. locations were London Heathrow (LHR) 1.804 million, Toronto (YYZ) 1.206 million, Cancun (CUN) 1.138 million, Paris (CDG) 929,000, and Mexico City (MEX) 845,000.
