NTTO: Visitor Numbers To / From U.S. Grow in August

The National Travel and Tourism Office recently released August numbers for travel to and from the United States.

International Arrivals 

  • Total international visitor volume to the U.S. of 7,527,819 increased +7.8 percent compared to August 2023 and represented 92.8 percent of the pre-COVID total visitor volume reported for August 2019.
  • Overseas visitor volume of 3,595,498 increased 6 percent from August 2023.
  • The largest number of total international visitor arrivals was from Canada (2,211,701), Mexico (1,720,620), the United Kingdom (394,975), India (240,262), and Japan (221,105). 
    Combined, these top 5 source markets accounted for 63.6 percent of total international arrivals.
  • Of the top 20 tourist generating countries to the United States, the United Kingdom (-0.2 percent), France (-0.7 percent), and South Korea (-0.3 percent) reported a decrease in visitor volume in August compared to August 2023.
  • The top 5 tourism arrivals for August were the United Kingdom (357,539), Japan (188,788), Germany (188,244), Italy (179,063), and France (174,513).
  • The top 5 business arrivals for August were India (34,761), the United Kingdom (30,399), Japan (24,904), Germany (18,501), and South Korea (14,729).
  • The top 5 student arrivals for August were China (98,867), India (74,825), South Korea (18,429), Vietnam (9,521), and Brazil (8,676).

International Departures 

Total U.S. citizen international visitor departures of 9,812,982 increased 10.5 percent compared to August 2023 and were 104 percent of total departures in pre-pandemic August 2019.

The year-to-date (YTD) market share for North America (Mexico & Canada) was 49.2 percent, and overseas was 50.8 percent.

  • Mexico recorded the largest outbound visitor volume of 3,104,115 (31.6 percent of total departures for August and 35.7 percent (YTD)). Canada recorded a year-over-year (YOY) increase of 13.6 percent.
  • Combined YTD, Mexico (25,906,467) and the Caribbean (8,211,246) accounted for 47 percent of total U.S. citizen international visitor departures.
  • Europe was the second largest market for outbound U.S. visitors with 2,335,864 departures. This accounted for 23.8 percent of all departures in August. Outbound visitation to Europe in August increased 20.1 percent compared to August 2023.
