Data recently released by the National Travel and Tourism Office (NTTO) show that in October:

International Arrivals

  • Total non-U.S. resident international visitor volume was 5,966,539, an increase 17% compared to October 2022 and reached 89% of the pre-COVID total visitor volume reported for the same month in 2019, up from 86% in September.
  • Overseas visitor volume of 2,982,006 increased +21% from October 2022.
  • October was the 31st consecutive month that total non-U.S. resident international arrivals increased year-over-year (YOY), and the eighth consecutive month that overseas visitors totaled over 2 million.
  • Of the top 20 tourist generating countries, none reported a decrease in visitor volume from October 2022.
  • The largest number of international visitor arrivals was from Canada (1,652,006), Mexico (1,332,527), the United Kingdom (412,676), Germany (210,719) and France (176,060). Combined, these top 5 source markets accounted for 63.4% of total international arrivals.

International Departures

  • Total U.S. citizen international visitor departures were 7,525,134, an increase of 11.3% compared to October 2022 and were 98.9% of total departures in pre-pandemic October 2019.
  • October was the 31st consecutive month that total U.S. citizen international visitor departures increased on a YOY basis.
  • October year-to-date (YTD) total U.S. citizen international visitor departures totaled 81,672,286, a YOY increase of 24.1%. The YTD market share for North America (Mexico & Canada) was 49.8% and overseas was 50.2%.
  • Mexico recorded the largest outbound visitor volume of 2,856,925 (38.0% of total departures for October and 36.1% YTD. Canada recorded a YOY increase of 16.1%.
  • Combined YTD, Mexico (29,516,303) and the Caribbean (8,870,521) accounted for 47% of total U.S. citizen international visitor departures.
  • Europe was the second largest market for outbound U.S. visitors with 1,627,347 departures. This accounted for 21.6% of all departures in October and 21.4% YTD. Outbound visitation to Europe in October 2023 increased 15.4% compared to October 2022.
