NTTO: Year-over-year Growth in 2024 Q2 Stats for International Air Travelers
The National Travel and Tourism Office recently published results of the Survey of International Air Travelers (SIAT) for the second quarter of 2024 covering both non-U.S. residents international inbound air arrivals to the United States and U.S. resident international air outbound departures from the United States. Highlights include:
International Inbound Arrivals to the United States in the Second Quarter of 2024.
- 12 million international visitor-arrivals (2.4 million from Canada, 799,000 from Mexico, and 8.8 million from overseas) increased 8.3 percent from the second quarter of 2023.
- The top overseas source markets for international air visitor-arrivals were the United Kingdom (993,000), India (672,000), Germany (493,000), France (455,000), and Brazil (444,000). Together, these top 5 source markets accounted for 35 percent of total overseas visitation to the U.S.
- The top U.S. states visited by international air travelers were New York (3.1 million), California (2.6 million), Florida (2.4 million), Nevada (1.2 million), and Texas (932,000).
- The main trip purpose for international visitors was Vacation/Holiday (53%), followed by Visit Friends and Relatives (24%), and Business (19%).
- The top leisure activities engaged by international visitors were Shopping (80%), Sightseeing (75%), National Parks/Monuments (35%), Art Galleries/Museums (29%), and Small Towns/Countryside (28%).
International Outbound Air Departures from the United States in the Second Quarter of 2024
- 20.3 million international air visitor-departures 1.5 million to Canada, 3.5 million to Mexico, and 15.3 million to overseas destinations) increased 8.4 percent from the second quarter of 2023.
- The top U.S. states of residence of U.S. visitors to overseas destinations were California (2.2 million), New York (1.6 million), Florida (1.3 million), Texas (1.2 million), and New Jersey (781,000).
- The top overseas destinations for U.S. international air visitor-departures from the United States were the United Kingdom (1.9 million), Italy (1.4 million), France (1.4 million), Dominican Republic (1.2 million), and Spain (995,000). Together, these top 5 destination markets accounted for 45 percent of total departures to overseas destinations.
- The main trip purpose for U.S. international air departures was led by Vacation/Holiday (62%), followed by Visit Friends and Relatives (26%), and Business (7%).
- The top leisure activities engaged by U.S. international air visitor-departures to overseas destinations were Sightseeing (83%), Shopping (72%), Small Towns/Countryside (48%), Historic Locations (45%), and Guided Tours (41%).
